♻ Tiffins: The Original Sustainable Takeaway

Long before the words “eco-friendly” or “zero waste” became part of our everyday vocabulary, millions of people in India were already practising sustainable eating through the tiffin tin! Every morning in cities like Mumbai, stainless steel tiffin tins are packed at home with fresh food, stacked neatly, and delivered by dabbawalas (lunchbox couriers) to offices and schools. Once the meal is finished, the tins are collected, washed, and reused; day after day, year after year. No plastic, no single-use packaging, and no excess waste. It’s a system built on simplicity, community, and respect for resources.

At The Tiffin Tin, this tradition has always been more than our name, it’s our inspiration. That’s why from the way we cook to how we deliver, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.

📦 Packaging with Purpose

Single-use plastic is one of the biggest environmental challenges in the food industry, and takeaway packaging is often a major culprit. We’ve chosen to do things differently. At The  Tiffin Tin, we’ve made a conscious decision to move away from plastic wherever possible and return to simpler, more sustainable materials. All of our dishes are served in sturdy cardboard containers, which are both recyclable and biodegradable. They’re designed to keep your food hot and fresh without relying on plastic coatings, meaning they can be easily broken down once you’re finished. We also use paper bags instead of plastic carriers for every order that customers can dispose of responsibly without harming the
environment.

Our approach is inspired by the original tiffin tradition: practical, reusable where possible, and designed with long-term use in mind. While our packaging isn’t made of steel tins, the principle is the same: to deliver delicious food in a way that respects resources and avoids unnecessary waste. It’s a small but meaningful way of bringing sustainable habits into everyday takeaway culture.

🌿 Small Choices, Big Impact

Sustainability isn’t something we do alone — it’s a shared effort between our kitchen, our riders, and you. By choosing The Tiffin Tin, you’re supporting a delivery system that’s lower in emissions, more mindful of waste, and inspired by centuries-old practices of reuse.
Here are a few simple ways you can help make your takeaway even greener:

• Recycle or reuse our containers wherever possible.
• Group orders with friends or family to reduce multiple delivery trips.
• Opt for cutlery-free delivery if you’re eating at home.

Every small choice adds up. Together, we can enjoy delicious, freshly cooked Indian food while looking after the planet, just like the tiffin carriers have done for generations.
